Description This proof gold quarter ounce coin, dated 2020, pays tribute to the iconic David Bowie. The Royal Mint commissioned a new series of proof coins that were first released in 2020; the “Music Legends” series celebrating the best of British pop and rock music. David Robert Jones was born in Brixton in 1947. When he was pursuing a career in pop music, he changed to his iconic name to avoid a clash. Bowie is one of the biggest stars in music history, releasing 27 albums of nearly universal critical acclaim and constantly reinventing himself and his music. Emerging from the hippy scene of late sixties London, Bowie took advantage of the increased interest in the space race and the 1969 moon landings to achieve his first hit – Space Oddity. Music was evolving quickly at this point and Bowie was at the vanguard of these changes, fully embracing glam rock and arguably his most successful incarnation as Ziggy Stardust. He then ensued on a run of form that can hardly be beaten by any other artist concluding with the “Berlin Trilogy” of albums in the mid-late 70s. Further success followed in the eighties with “Scary Monsters and Super Creeps” before his output reduced. The reverse of the coin, designed by Jody Clark, features Bowie during his Berlin phase and features iconography associated with his albums and style throughout his career. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes, informative booklet and certificate of authenticity.
