Brilliant Uncirculated Gold £5 – 2012
Description This Brilliant Uncirculated Gold £5, also known as the Quintuple Sovereign, is dated 2012. Brilliant Uncirculated or ‘BU’ coin is one that has never been in circulation. In 1817 as part of a reform of coinage, the modern sovereign was introduced, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon. However this year features a new portrayal of St. George and the Dragon. The Royal Mint held a competition to find a one-time reverse design in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Paul Day explained that he focused on St George being a medieval knight of Arthurian legend rather than a classical hero and the dragon was represented with a more threatening attitude and size. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The 2012 £5 coin comes in a plastic capsule along with original Royal Mint boxes and certificate of authenticity. This coin was limited to 1,250 issues. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free. All UK gold and silver bullion coins manufactured by the Royal Mint are legal tender and are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
