Belgium 50 Ecu (Charlemagne)
Description The Belgium 50 Ecu, featuring Charlemagne, were produced by The Royal Mint of Belgium between 1989-1990. This coin is dated 1989, the first year of issue. The obverse of the coin features a facing portrait of Charlemagne, who was king of the Franks and Christian emperor of the West. The territories that he controlled became known as the Carolingian empire and he did much to shape the character of medieval Europe. The Latin inscription reads ‘KAROLVS MAGNVS ROMANORV IMPR AVGVSTVS’. Karolus Imperator Augustus translates to Charles the Emperor Augustus. The reverse of the coin depicts 50 Ecu, surrounded by 12 stars. These coins are preowned. The Royal Mint of Belgium also produced a 50 Ecu dated 1987.
