Description This Austria 1000 Schilling, dated 1976, marks the 1000th Anniversary of the Babenberg Dynasty. Their rule began in 976 AD, when Leopold von Babenberg became margrave of the Ostmark, margrave is a medieval title for the military commander assigned to maintain the defence of one of the border provinces. Between 976 and 1246, the Duchy Austria was one of the extensive feudal possessions of the Babenberg family. They are one of the most famous families of early medieval Europe and they established their first residence in Pöchlarn before moving to Melk. The obverse of the coin features the Imperial Eagle/Austrian coat of arms, along with the inscription ‘REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH’ and denomination ‘1000 SCHILLING’. The reverse of the Austria 1000 Schilling features the seal of Duke Friedrich II, the rider holding a shield on a galloping horse, the date of ‘976-1976’ is inscribed above. These coins are preowned.
