75th Anniversary of VJ Day Sovereign – Struck on 14 August 2020
Description This BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) gold sovereign, dated 2020, marks the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day. This special sovereign was struck on 14 August 2020, on the same date in 1945 the Prime Minister announced the news of Japan’s surrender and the end of the Second World War. There was a two-day national holiday which began with Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day). In 1817 as part of a reform of coinage, the modern sovereign was introduced, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon. The initials ‘BP’ can be found on the base under the hoof of the horse. The obverse features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse of the VJ Day sovereign features the iconic image of St George and the Dragon, a ‘VJ75’ mint mark and struck to a matte finish.
