Description The 2017 Proof Three Coin Sovereign Set is one of the most collectible of the sovereign sets released by the Royal Mint. Created to commemorate 200 years since the modern Sovereign coin was first minted in 1817, the design was only issued as a proof coin and the three coin set has a limited mintage of 450. The coins are minted as a replica of the 1817 Pistrucci design, featuring the classic image of St. George defeating the dragon, and surrounded by the Order of the Garter belt. This belt is inscribed with the message “Honi soit qui mal y pense” which translates to “shame on anyone who thinks evil of it”. All official Royal Mint Sovereigns are minted in 22ct gold and have been so since the original “modern” design was issued in 1817. The coins weigh 7.98g, of which 7.32g is gold and they have a diameter of 22.05mm. This 1989 Proof Three Coin Sovereign Set contains the double sovereign, the sovereign and the half sovereign.
