200th Anniversary of the Birth of Prince Albert Sovereign 2019
Description This celebration sovereign, dated 2019, marks the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Prince Albert. As he was not a king in his own right, he was given the title of Prince Consort in recognition of his important role during his marriage to Queen Victoria. They had nine children and he often assisted with her working duties during her pregnancies. He campaigned for better conditions for the working class in Britain and abolition of slavery. He was a respected patron of art, science and trade and industry. This sovereign was struck on 26th August 2019 to mark the anniversary and bears a special privy mark inspired by the pairs entwined monograms, this was to symbolise how inseparable Albert and Victoria were. In 1817 as part of a reform of coinage, the modern sovereign was introduced, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon. The initials ‘BP’ can be found on the base under the hoof of the horse. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This coin is struck in Brilliant Uncirculated matte finish. The sovereign is one of the most recognisable coins in the world.
