Available now: limited edition two-coin 999 silver proof 5oz Petition Crown sets from the UK's national mint. Just 500 issued! This new addition to The Royal Mint's Great Engravers range is a tribute to the talents of seventeenth century English engraver, Thomas Simon. He created historically important coins for Oliver Cromwell but is best known for the so-called Petition Crown. Struck in 1663, this rare pattern coin gets its name from the inscribed edge, containing a plea to King Charles II, newly restored to the English throne. Simon, formerly Chief Engraver to the Royal Mint, had been usurped by a family of Dutch artists, the Roettiers brothers, who had secured a lucrative commission to design new milled coins. The Petition Crown was Simon's way of showing that he could do better. You'll find his strident plea in raised lettering to the edge of both coins in this 999 silver set as well as the obverse and reverse of the supremely rare 1663 coin, remastered by The Royal Mint's design team. These intricate historic motifs are paired with Martin Jennings' new portrait of King Charles III. This pair of proof coins, each weighing 156.30 grams are offered in their original presentation packing with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
