Graded PF 69 Ultra Cameoby NGC, this St Helena 1kg silver proof Una and the Lion coin is from a limited edition of just 70 pieces. This remarkable coin recreates the reverse design of the gold Una and the Lion Five Pound coin: struck in 1839 and long considered amongst the most beautiful coins in the world. Somewhere between 300 and 500 originals were minted, intended only for collectors. Surviving examples achieve astonishing prices when they come to the market. The design - the work of Royal Mint Chief Engraver William Wyon - features a crowned young woman, holding an orb and directing a lion with her sceptre. It was inspired by an episode in Edmund Spencer’s epic poem, The Faerie Queene but the image can also be said to represent the recently enthroned Queen Victoria, guiding her nation (represented by the English lion). This sought-after design has been remastered by the East India Company for a range of coinage, minted in partnership with the issuing authority of the island of Saint Helena. The reissue mirrors a similar release in The Royal Mint’s Great Engravers series. This Five Sovereigns silver proof piece is struck in an astonishing kilogram of .999 fine silver. The coin has a diameter of 100.00 millimetres and face value of £5. This example comes sealed in is Numismatic Guaranty Company holder.
