1997 Britannia One Ounce Silver Proof Coin
The first silver Britannia in a limited edition proof finish. The Royal Mint launched its popular Britannia range in 1987 with a line of sought-after gold coins, inspired by the female personification of the British Isles. In 1997, the UK's national mint introduced the first silver Britannias, beginning a series of annual issues that continues to the present day. This 1997 proof coin is struck in solid .958 'Britannia' silver and offers one troy ounce of pure precious metal with a collectable proof finish. It features a special reverse design, created by sculptor Philip Nathan, which shows Britannia driving a chariot pulled by two rearing horses. A limited number of these proof 1oz silver Britannias were issued in 1997, and our pre-owned examples come in the original box with a certificate of authenticity.
