In 1996, England hosted the tenth UEFA European Football Championship. To celebrate, The Royal Mint released this extra-heavy piedfort silver proof Two Pound coin with a reverse crafted by sculptor John Wills. In a simple but instantly recognisable design, the coin gives the impression of a football – the unusual dished effect adding to the image. The date ‘1996’ sits in the centre of the ball, and is surrounded by sixteen small rings symbolising each team that would participate in the finals. The edge inscription reads ‘THE TENTH EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP’. The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II in her third definitive portrait by Raphael Maklouf. From a limited mintage of 7,634 coins, this edition is struck in 31.96 grams of .925 sterling silver. Delivered in its original packaging with a certificate of authenticity.
