When Queen headlined the initial Music Legends collection, it represented the first time that a band had been memorialised on UK coinage. The Royal Mint kept up a steady beat of releases through 2020, adding collections celebrating Elton John and David Bowie to the popular series. 2021 saw the introduction of range celebrating English rock band, The Who. Formed in the early 60s, The Who have now sold more than 100 million records worldwide in a career spanning six decades. They’re known for singles like My Generation and Baba O’Riley, pioneering rock operas like Tommy and Quadrophenia, paired with an electric stage presence that shaped punk, metal, power pop and progressive rock. Their instantly recognisable bullseye logo features on the reverse of this coin in a design crafted by Henry Gray alongside a Rickenbacker guitar with a Union Jack motif and a pair of pinball machine flippers, a ball speeding down the neck. The design on this limited edition collectible coin is enhanced with a shockwave effect that emits from the logo and a special laser printed patterned edge using The Who symbols. This one kilogram edition is composed of 1,005 grams of 999 fine gold. It has a remarkable 100.00 diameter and a face value of £1,000 / One Thousand Pounds.
