The 2018 Red Dragon of Wales 1oz gold proof coin is a desirable addition to The Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts series, struck as part of a highly limited edition of 400 pieces. The Queen's Beasts collection was inspired by the ten heraldic statues that stood guard outside Westminster Abbey at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The dragon, a fierce emblem of Wales since the early medieval period, was later adopted by the Tudor monarchs as a supporter to the English Royal Arms. Jody Clark's reverse design captures the beast with wings raised and tail curled around a shield showing the arms of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native Prince of Wales. Struck in one troy ounce of 24-carat (999.9) gold, this £100 proof coin combines historical symbolism with masterful craftsmanship and is supplied in its original presentation case with a numbered certificate.
