2018 Queen's Beasts Black Bull Of Clarence Five Ounce Gold Proof Coin
The Black Bull of Clarence forms part of the highly popular Queen’s Beasts coin series from the Royal Mint, which are available in a wide range of sizes and metals. This pre-owned edition is the gold proof five ounce coin, issued in the original presentation box and having a limited edition presentation of just 70 pieces. The Queen's Beasts series was released in 2017, commemorating the year Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning monarch in history. In this edition of the series, the coin captures a depiction of the Black Bull crossed with a shield. The Black Bull of Clarence is mostly associated with the rise of the House of York during the 15th century, in particular King Edward IV and King Richard III. To demonstrate their royal ancestry, they adapted this symbol of power and strength, which traces its roots to Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence. The reverse of this coin shows a design by Jody Clark, who places the royal arms as they looked during the Wars of the Roses in the centre of this design, with the bull positioned behind them. The obverse shows the fifth British coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was also designed by Clark. Only 70 coins were issued in this limited edition presentation, which consists of the original wooden box and certificate of authenticity.
