2023 Lunar Year Of The Rabbit Quarter Ounce Gold Proof Coin
Quarter ounce gold proof Lunar rabbit coin from The Royal Mint from a limited edition of just 388. 2023 marks the 'Year of the Rabbit' in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, and to celebrate the occasion the Mint issued a collection of proof coins and brilliant uncirculated coins. Part of the popular 'Shengxiao' coin collection, this 1/4 ounce Lunar Rabbit is the tenth release in the series but is actually the fourth animal in the zodiac: this peculiarity exists because the Mint began the series in 2014, which is in the middle of the lunar cycle. Each annual release since has infused traditional Chinese culture with modern British design elements and the Year of the Rabbit range is no different. Rabbits have a zodiac reputation for intelligence, vigilance and gentleness, with those born in Lunar Rabbit years believed to be creative, compassionate and noble. Louie Maryon is responsible for adapting these traits onto the reverse engraving of this collectable coin, which shows a young rabbit amongst a backdrop of leaves with the lettering 'YEAR OF THE RABBIT 2023' and the Chinese character '兔'. On the coin's obverse, Jody Clark's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is visible: the fifth and final portrait of the Queen to appear on UK coinage. This is one of the last coins which features the late Queen's effigy. Each 24 carat (999.9 fine) 1/4oz coin measures 22.00 millimetres in diameter and weighs a total of 7.80 grams, giving it an actual gold weight of precisely one-quarter of a troy ounce. The pre-owned coin you'll receive is offered alongside the original presentation box accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
