2008 Britannia Quarter Ounce Platinum Proof
Highly limited edition 1/4 oz platinum proof Britannia composed of 7.85 grams of 999.5 fine platinum with a 20.00 millimetre diameter. Low mintage year for a rare issue. This coin features a new reverse design, created for the 2008 Britannia range by veteran coinage artist John Bergdahl. The female personification of the British Isles stands proud and facing left, staring into a rising wave. Her helmet, trident and shield, as well as the lighthouse behind her recall earlier depictions on British coinage. The composition of the coin - ‘1/4 OUNCE PLATINUM’ is listed below Berghdahl’s design. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. This is the fourth portrait to be used on Elizabeth II’s money. It’s seen on circulating coinage as well as collectors pieces like this. This platinum coin is technically legal tender with a face value of £25 / Twenty Five Pounds but is prized for its one-year-only reverse, its fine platinum composition and the small number that were issued. Just 100 quarter ounce platinum Britannias were offered in 2008 and this was only the second year that this denomination was offered in this precious metal. This example comes in its original box from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
