2026 Jean Baptiste Merlen Shields Gold Four Coin Set
Premium gold coin set, celebrating Jean Baptiste Merlen's enduring shield reverses. In the early 19th century, the tails side of many UK coins was redesigned as part of a major overhaul of British currency. Among the most celebrated reverses from this period are attributed to Jean Baptiste Merlen (1769-1850), a French-born engraver, recruited to work for the Royal Mint in the aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo. Merlen's work can be seen on the Sovereigns of three British monarchs: George IV, William IV and Victoria and three historic examples of his work are included in this limited edition set. These are accompanied by a modern tribute to the engraver's work: the 2025 William IV Crown, struck in 24-carat gold as part of The Royal Mint's celebrated Great Engravers collection. With just 15 of these sets compiled, this is a truly scarce collector's piece for those who appreciate Jean Baptiste Merlen's oeuvre.
