1831 Proof Crown William IV Silver Coin
The 1831 Crown is a rare and highly desirable British coin. These silver coins were not issued for circulation, with proof issues found in scarce 1831 specimen sets of which approximately 200 are thought to have been issued. Several varieties are known, with differing die axis and signatures to the truncation of the portrait, but all feature William Wyon's right-facing bust of King William IV. This is paired with a unique reverse design, engraved by Jean Baptiste Merlen. His design shows a quartered shield with the arms of the House of Hanover in the centre, surrounded by the Order of the Garter and surmounted by a royal crown and a draped ermine mantle. Its a celebrated motif among collectors of 19th century British coinage and contributes to the desirability of this rare issue.
