NGC graded MS 62 Yuri Gagarin USSR gold proof medal. This scarce commemorative issue, part of a series dedicated to famous Russians and the Soviet space program. This undated medal celebrates Yuri Gagarin, the Soviet cosmonaut who became the first human to travel into outer space on 12 April 1961, orbiting the Earth aboard Vostok 1. The reverse displays the date of Gagarin's flight, along with an image of a man and a rocket blasting off into the cosmos. The obverse features a profile portrait of Gagarin, attributed to sculptor G N Postnikov. This medal is struck in 17 grams of solid .900 gold and is one of just 936 of its kind issued.
