Silver medal celebrating Queen Victoria’s 1887 Golden Jubilee, commissioned by the Imperial Institute. Obverse: veiled, crowned and laureate bust of the queen, facing left wearing necklace and Garter Star. Legend around: ‘VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX’. Tiny ‘JP’ initials to shoulder for John Pinches (of the firm of medallists) after Thomas Brock. Reverse: exterior of a grand building, pennant curving around and behind reading ‘THE IMPERIAL INSTITUTE / 1887 / TO COMMEMORATE THE JUBILEE OF VICTORIA E. ET I.’. Below: ALBERT EDWARD P. / PRESIDENT’. The Imperial Institute was established in London in the Golden Jubilee year to encourage links across the Empire, following the success of the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition. The building depicted on the medal that the Institute occupied was located on Exhibition Row in South Kensington and now forms part of Imperial College, London. In 1958 the name was changed to the Commonwealth Institute. This medal comes in an old Spink & Son leather box, measures 37.00 millimetres in diameter and weighs 16.6 grams. Grade: UNC - Much reflection and golden rainbow toning in original issue box: Uncirculated. BHM 3226, Eimer 1737. System.Threading.Tasks.Task`1[System.String]
