Just 300 Petition Crown sets issued! Struck in 24-carat gold, this two-coin set is a new addition to The Royal Mint's Great Engravers series. A tribute to the best of British numismatic design, this premium collection from the UK's national mint recreates rare and historic coinage for a new audience. The coins in this set feature the work of seventeenth-century English engraver Thomas Simon. His masterpiece is the so-called Petition Crown, created after the Restoration of King Charles II. After collaborating with the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War, Simon had been sidelined from his position at the Royal Mint, then based at the Tower of London. Simon's 1663 Petition Crown was a demonstration of his skills and features a remarkable inscribed edge, imploring the King to use his design on new machine-made coins. The raised lettering is replicated on both of these 2023 coins which are struck with Simon's portrait of old Kind Charles and the beautiful quartered arms motif he created for the reverse. These are paired with Martin Jennings' new effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, a distant descendant of Simon's patron. Each piece in this two-coin set is struck in 62.42 grams of 999.9 gold to The Royal Mint's finest proof standard. That's over four ounces of pure gold. You'll receive your 2023 petition Crown coins in their original presentation box with their numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed. In stock ready to dispatch!
