The greyhound that appears on the reverse of this coin was a symbol associated with both the House of York and the House of Lancaster during the Wars of the Roses, connoting loyalty and vigour. Henry VII, the first Tudor king, adopted the dog to indicate his descent from both rival houses and its a crowned Tudor rose that appears on the shield in this dynamic design. The image is the work of Jody Clark, as is the portrait of Elizabeth II that features on the obverse of this piece.
