The Royal Mint continued with its lunar coin series in 2017 with the release of the Year of the Rooster range. Formally known as the Shēngxiào collection, the rooster is the tenth animal in the zodiac sequence. This edition is the gold tenth ounce coin, struck twice during production to give a brilliant uncirculated finish. Those born in the Year of the Rooster are believed to be hard workers and prideful in their appearance, with truthful, open and loyal characteristics. As with previous Royal Mint lunar coins, British-Chinese artist Wuon-Gean Ho was commissioned to design the coin's reverse, which shows a rooster amongst ten sea-thrift plants. The number ten is significant in Chinese culture as it represents perfection, and the Chinese character '雞' is also seen. To complement this, Jody Clark's engraving of Queen Elizabeth II is visible on the obverse. Your 1/10oz coin will weigh a total of 3.13 grams and measure 16.50 millimetres in diameter. 24 carat gold is the alloy used, which in millesimal fineness is expressed as 0.9999. Only 980 of these coins were ever produced by The Royal Mint, making them a must-have for lunar coin collectors. As standard, the coin is housed in the original limited edition presentation box, with the added bonus of free UK delivery when you buy from The Britannia Coin Company.
