2015 Definitive Britannia Five Ounce Gold Proof Coin
One of just 50 issued, this five ounce 9999 gold proof coin features a new interpretation of the legendary figure of Britannia. Antony Dufort's head and shoulders portrait shows the warrior goddess and personification of the British Isles wearing her Corinthian helmet. She holds a Union Jack shield and a trident, ready to defend our shores. Dufort's Britannia began gracing circulating UK £2 coins in 2015. For coin collectors this represented a welcome return. Britannia has been a feature of our coinage since Roman times, becoming a constant presence from the late seventeenth-century. There was outcry when the iconic seated Britannia was removed from the 50p in 2009. This scarce 5oz gold edition adds a seascape to Dufort's new Britannia with a lighthouse to the left and a ship to the right. Struck to a fine proof finish in 156.30 grams of 24 carat gold, this coin forms part of the Royal Mint's annual Britannia range, introduced in 1987 as a bullion option for the discerning investor. Today, collectors seek out limited edition large coins and sets with changing designs which breathe new life into Britannia's legend. This pre-owned 2015 edition is one of the first Britannias to feature Jody Clark's fifth definitive coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. It's offered in its original presentation case from The Royal Mint with the numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed. A stunning coin for the serious Britannia fan.
