The final Victorian Half Sovereign. This London mint coin was the last to be struck with an image of Queen Victoria, following her death in January 1901. Though she was immediately succeeded by her eldest son, all 1901-dated British coins bear the Veiled Head portrait of Victoria by Sir Thomas Brock, introduced in 1893. This is paired with the instantly recognisable image of Saint George slaying a dragon, originally engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci back in 1817. Records indicate that some 2,037,664 Half Sovereigns were struck in 22-carat gold at the London branch of the Royal Mint in 1901. With no Half Sovereigns issued in Perth, Sydney or Melbourne, this last Victorian date is a key addition to any Half Sovereign collection.
