Historic 1893 gold proof Five Sovereign, featuring the elegant 'Widowed Head' portrait of Victoria, wearing a veil and a diadem. The so-called 'Old Head' was the final effigy of the Queen to appear on British coinage and is the work of the sculptor and medallist Thomas Brock. The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci's timeless Saint George and the dragon design, first used in 1817, with the date (1893) below the scene. Quintuple Sovereigns are traditionally struck in 39.9 grams of 22-carat gold. This late Victorian issue is from a low mintage of 20,405 currency strikes, making it significantly scarcer than the 1887 gold £5. A key addition to any serious Sovereign collection.
