1893 Double Sovereign Two Pound Victoria Gold Coin
Veiled Head 1893 Double Sovereign, ready to add to your collection. These 22-carat gold coins were struck at the London branch of the Royal Mint in the year that a new coinage portrait was introduced. Sir Thomas Brock's 'Old Head' had been commissioned to replace the unpopular 'Jubilee Head' introduced only a few years beforehand. Brock's effigy shows Victoria in old age, wearing a small crown and a long widow's veil. It's paired on this £2 coin with the classic Saint George and the dragon reverse, created by Benedetto Pistrucci back in 1817. Double Sovereigns are twice the weight of a standard Sovereign and were rarely struck in the 19th century, making these currency issues very desirable to those interested in British milled gold.
