1835 Sovereign William IV Gold Coin
Struck during the reign of King William IV, the 1835 Sovereign is a classic example of early nineteenth-century British gold coinage. Minted in solid 22-carat gold to a specification established in 1817, these coins feature William Wyon's right-facing portrait of the King on the obverse, with an elegant crowned and garnished shield of Royal Arms on the reverse. 1835 Sovereigns were minted in the same year that Charles Darwin arrived in the Galapagos on the HMS Beagle and Hans Christian Anderson published his first collection of fairy tales. With no Sovereigns issued in 1834 and a notably low mintage for 1835 (just 723,441), these coins are regarded as rare and remain highly desirable as a key addition to any collection of early milled Sovereigns.
