Limited edition silver proof Britannia sets from 1998 featuring 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz coins from The Royal Mint. These collectable sets are offered in their original box of issue with a certificate of authenticity enclosed. The first silver Britannias were issued in 1997, following up on the success of gold Britannias, first struck a decade earlier. The coins get their name from the female personification of the United Kingdom who is shown in various guises on the reverse of these coins. 1998-dated Britannias, including those in these sets, feature the classic 'standing Britannia' design, created by sculptor Philip Nathan. This motif was created for the first gold Britannia investment coins and takes inspiration from historic British coinage. The obverse of each of the four coins features Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. 1998 was the first year this effigy was used on coins in the Britannia range. Silver Britannias issued before 2013 are made from 958 (98.5% pure) silver which is known as 'Britannia silver'. That means that these four coin sets offers 57.50 grams of pure silver in total. Just 3,045 were issued in this presentation. These 1998 silver Britannia sets are pre-owned and may show signs of toning as is typical with older British silver coinage.
