1997 Britannia Four Coin Silver Proof Set
First year of issue! Silver proof 1997 four-coin Britannia sets from The Royal Mint from a limited issue. These highly sought-after British coin sets contain 1997-dated 1oz, 1/2oz. 1/4oz and 1/10oz Britannia coins, struck in 958 silver with a fine proof finish. 1997 was the first year that the UK's national mint issued Britannias in silver. The Britannia range was introduced a decade earlier though these collectable investment coins were at first only struck in gold. 1997 Britannias, including the ones in these sets, at the only silver pieces from this line to feature Raphael Maklouf's third definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Coin issued in the following year feature an effigy by Ian Rank-Broadley. These 1997 coins also feature a special reverse, used only in this year and designed by sculptor Philip Nathan. His charioteer design is used on all four proof Britannias in these sets which together offer 57.50 grams of pure silver. These sets come in their original green leather box of issue with the coins enclosed in individual capsules. A certificate of authenticity is enclosed.
