1997 Gold Proof Britannia Four Coin Set
To mark 10 years since the first issue of The Royal Mint's Britannia coin series, a one-off reverse design was approved to appear on the 1997 edition. Like the traditional standing Britannia on the previous editions, the unique reverse was designed by esteemed Royal Mint engraver Philip Nathan. In a homage to the Celtic Queen Boadicea, it shows Britannia in command of a chariot being drawn by two horses. She is helmeted, carrying her trident in her left hand. On the obverse, the third UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II can be seen by Raphael Maklouf. It was used on British coinage for 12 years, with 1997 being the last year it was seen in circulating currency. Four coins are available in the limited edition square box set: 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz. Each coin is struck to a top-quality proof finish, obtained using highly polished dies during production to give an attractive frosted finish. The fine gold weight for all the coins combined is 1.85 troy ounces, with a total weight of 62.77 grams. Unlike more recent Britannia coins, these proof versions are struck in 22 carat gold, alloyed with silver, giving them a brilliant yellow gold appearance. Included with the black presentation box are protective coin capsules and a numbered certificate of authenticity. Despite the issue limit of 1,500, only 892 of these sets were issued worldwide. Exempt for capital gains tax and VAT for UK residents, with the added bonus of free delivery to UK addresses with The Britannia Coin Company.
