The Queen's Beasts coin series from the Royal Mint depict the heraldic statues present at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, with this edition showing the Griffin of Edward III. Although the Griffin was the second release in the bullion coin series, it was intended to be the last individual beast release in the brilliant uncirculated cupronickel series. The Griffin of King Edward III is an ancient creature, part lion and part eagle, and the King had the mythical beast placed on his private seal. On the coin's reverse, the great beast is seen clutching a shield depicting Windsor Castle, which is the birthplace of Edward III. On the coin's other side, the obverse, the fifth official UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II can be seen. Both designs were created by the Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark, who also designed all the other coins in the Queen's Beasts series. Each coin is carefully placed in a protective capsule housed in an informative coin folder, with details about the Queen's Beasts and the Griffin of Edward III in particular. The coin's specifications are a weight of 28.28 grams, a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and a brilliant uncirculated finish, which is perfect for collectors or as a gift.
