One ounce 999.5 platinum bullion Unicorn of Scotland coin. This design was the fourth platinum bullion release in the blockbuster Queen’s Beasts series from The Royal Mint. The collection celebrates Her Majesty the Queen’s royal and noble lineage with designs inspired by British heraldry and a menagerie of beastly statues that guarded Westminster Abbey during her 1953 coronation. The reverse of this £100 coin features the mythical Unicorn of Scotland. Legend says that the Scots choose the unicorn as their emblem because the horned beast was a natural enemy of the lion: the symbol of their old enemy, the English. After the 1707 Act of Union, the unicorn joined its rival on the arms of the United Kingdom. On this Queen's Beasts coin, the rearing unicorn is gorged (collared) and chained to a shield that bears the royal arms of Scotland. This design is the work of Jody Clark who is also the artist behind the portrait of Elizabeth II that appears on the obverse of this collectable platinum coin. These investment pieces have a face value of £100 and feature the chainmail textured background that distinguishes bullion Queen’s Beasts pieces from their proof counterparts. It’s struck in 31.21 grams of 999.5 platinum, equating to a pure platinum content of 31.10 grams. As UK legal tender this Unicorn coin is Capital Gains Tax exempt and supplied in protective packaging to preserve the uncirculated finish.
