VAT-free, pre-owned 1oz silver Britannia with special reverse design, issued by The Royal Mint in 2008. Our top-quality second-hand Britannias are sold under the VAT margin scheme, offering you a better price than new coins. They're struck in 32.45 grams of .958 (95.8%) silver with a pure silver content of exactly one troy ounce. These coins have a face value of Two Pounds but their true worth lies in that silver content, as well as their collectibility. Britannia - the female personification of the British Isles - first appeared on our coinage in Roman times but she only got her own range from The Royal Mint in 1987. These investment coins were originally only available in gold before silver editions were introduced in 1997. Britannias are issued annually, and are regarded as the UK's premier bullion coins. For the 2008 artist John Bergdahl has reinvented the classic 'standing Britannia' motif by Philip Nathan, used on most of these bullion coins since they were first issued. Berghdahl's Britannia retains the same basic composition with a modern, stylised touch. The goddess holds her trident aloft against a rearing wave, her union jack shield resting at her side. Behind her stands a lighthouse, a motif sometimes seen on historic coins featuring Britannia, emphasising her dominion over the seas. It's a striking design, used only on coins struck in 2008. It's paired with Ian Rank-Broadley's bust of Queen Elizabeth II which is shown on the obverse. One of 100,000 issued in this year, we'll supply your Britannia in protective packaging and ship it for free from our shop in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire.
