2001 Britannia One Ounce Silver Bullion Coin
Lowest mintage year: just 44,816 issued! 2001 1oz silver bullion British Britannia: pre-owned and VAT free. Britannias are The Royal Mint’s premier bullion coins. Introduced in 1987, they were initially only available in gold before silver editions joined the range in 1997. They get their name from the Britannia, the female personification of the British Isles. She first appeared on coinage in Roman times and was revived as a motif in the early modern period, gracing the money of King Charles II. In Victorian times she became a defender of our coasts, often shown holding Poseidon’s trident. That’s how she’s depicted in the classic ‘standing Britannia’ design by Philip Nathan that graces the majority of these investment coins. An alternate design - also by Nathan - features on 2001 editions. Here she’s accompanied by a lion, used as a heraldic symbol of England since the middle ages. The design is an ode to a rare and famous British coin, known as Una and the Lion, struck in 1839. The text here is verticle with ‘ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER’ to the left and ‘BRITANNIA 2001’ to the right. The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the face value: £2. These 2001 coins are struck in 32.45 grams of .958 (95.8%) silver and, as such, contain exactly one troy ounce of Ag. As UK legal tender these coins are Capital Gains Tax exempt while their second-hand status means we can offer them with minimal VAT as part of the margin scheme. The exceptionally low mintage for this year as well as the one-off design makes this edition particularly collectable.
