Pre-owned, VAT free, uncirculated silver 1oz Britannia from 1999. Silver Britannias were first offered by The Royal Mint in 1997, ten years after the gold Britannia was struck for the first time. This 1999 coin marks the first appearance of Philip Nathan’s Boudicca Britannia design on a silver bullion coin: it had previously been used on the proof issues made in 1997. In this reverse, Nathan garbs Britannia - the female personification of the British Isles - as the legendary queen. She drives a chariot pulled by two spirited horses in a scene that reminds us of Britannia’s role as a warlike defender of our shores whose origins lie in the Roman occupation of Britain. The artist’s initials (‘PN’) are inscribed to the left of Britannia’s cape. The legend reads ‘ONE · OUNCE · FINE · SILVER · 1999’ with ‘BRITANNIA’ below. Nathan’s design is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, introduced to UK coinage the previous year. Rank-Broadley’s effigy shows Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara and is surrounded by a legend that reads: ‘ELIZABETH · II · D · G REG · FID · DEF · 2 · POUNDS’. The face value of these coins makes them UK legal tender which confers a Capital Gains Tax exemption: important for when you sell off your silver coins. Another tax benefit: as our silver Britannia’s are pre-owned we don’t have to add VAT to the price meaning we can pass those savings on to you. These coins are composed of exactly one troy ounce of pure silver. They are struck in 32.45 grams of 95.8% (.958) silver and have a diameter of 40.00 millimetres. Some 69,394 were issued in this year. Yours will come packaged in a clear coin sleeve and we’ll post it free and insured to UK addresses.
