1998 Britannia One Ounce Silver Bullion Coin
VAT free 1998 1oz silver Britannia. The first of these bullion coins were issued in gold by The Royal Mint in 1987, named for for Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain. In 1997, the tenth anniversary of the Britannia range, the Mint released a new collection in silver, including a new 1oz coin with a face value of £2 / Two Pounds. These have been issued annually ever since, becoming popular with investors thanks to the tax benefits, the prestige of British coinage and the appealing designs featured on their reverse. The 1998 one ounce Britannia was the first silver bullion coin in the series and features a design by Philip Nathan that was used on the original gold Britannias. Referred to as the 'standing' Britannia it shows a full-length female figure with a trident in her right hand and an olive branch and Union Jack shield in her other. Her hair and her dress billows in a sea wind as she guards Britains shores. This design has been used on over half of the Britannias issued by the Royal Mint. The legend reads 'BRITANNIA · 1998 · ONE · OUNCE · FINE · SILVER' and the artist's surname is inscribed below the figure's feet. On the obverse, is Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. This is the fourth official effigy, first seen on British coinage in this year, and depicts Elizabeth II in the 'Girls of Great Britain and Ireland' tiara. Around the portrait is inscribed 'ELIZABETH · II · D · G REG · FID · DEF · 2 · POUNDS'. This 1998 coin is struck in .958 (95.8%) fine silver and weighs 32.45 grams, giving it a pure silver content of exactly one troy ounce. It has a diameter of 40.00 millimetres and a milled edge. Some 88,909 of these uncirculated 1oz silver Britannias were minted in this year.
