1880/70 Overdate Sovereign PCGS MS63
S-3856A, with WW buried and long tail. While all the 1880/70 overdates are somewhat scarcer than their standard versions, this particular type (with both long tail and buried WW initials) appears to be one of the scarcest varieties of the overdate. Unrecorded in Spink, this is only the second time since 2007 that I’ve had this variety in stock. The previous example was graded MS62 with PCGS and sold in August 2014. Further research shows that another example, described as extremely fine with a dig on the neck, sold in Baldwin’s in 2012. The piece on offer here is the single-finest graded by PCGS (7/18), and an overall attractive example with fresh lustre and lots of eye appeal. Very scarce. Professional Coin Grading Service is the global leader in coin authentication and grading. With over 60 million coins graded and counting, PCGS is trusted by collectors, dealers, and investors to certify authenticity, protect value, and elevate market confidence. This is a direct conversion of the 70-point PCGS grade to a 10-point scale, intended to present the grade in a more intuitive format for newer collectors. It is not our personal opinion or an attempt at regrading the coin to a different standard.
